The torch above us is a symbol used to remind the girls to stand for truth and righteousness when they are 12 we give them a necklace with the torch on it.

K.bug and I had the opportunity to attend Young Women Conference at the Conference Center downtown this year.  I was so excited this would be her first conference, we had tickets for the Conference center and we were able to take Grandma M. too. 
We started with going to the Temple first then to dinner and finally to the conference center it was such a great night. 
The talks were wonderful, they spoke to them about keeping their sights on the Temple, making good decisions to get there and help make their lives a bit easier,
and about finding the light in Christ.
The first Speaker Ann M. Dibb spoke to the Young Women {or all} about having the courage to stand for right even if you have to Stand alone.  That the most important commandment to follow is the one that you are having the hardest time with at that moment.  Meaning they are all important, but if you are struggling with one in particular that one must be the most important for you at that time.
Mary N. Cook spoke about Education and how important it is for each of us to receive as much knowledge as we possibly can right now.  Whether or not you want to stay home and be with your children.  If there is ever a time that you cannot you need to have skills to help support your family.  I have seen this truth so much in my adult years.  One of my favorite quotes from her talk is "Seek learning by Faith".  I know that as we learn and seek  guidance from Heavenly Father, the Holy Ghost will further our learning.  She also spoke about Spiritual learning and growth and how it has to be done individually that we cannot borrow others spirituality it has to be our own.
Elaine S. Dalton spoke of putting our shiney on.  She spoke of her little girl wanting to put shiney on like mom when she was small {shiney meaning facial cream}.  She said what her daughter didn't realize is that she already had her shiney on it was the light of Christ and she was born with it.  She taught that because we are Daughters of God we too were born with that shiney, but we have to make good choices and seek it out to keep it.
She said to take inventory of our habits and hearts each day and like the Nephites in the Book of Mormon when they buried their weapons of war in the earth that they too needed to get rid of the bad and bury it.   She asked them to think of what their Mental Image is for their goal, where it was taking them, and did they need to adjust their goal or image to be able to come to the Mountain of the Lord.
President Monson spoke about how Teen years are not easy years that this is a prime time for Satan to tempt you.  That there is a way to Safety!  You need to look for the light of the Lord becuse NOTHING is too dark for the light to rescue you.
He spoke of 3 things in particular to help us hold to His Light.
1. Believe- to believe that you are a Daughter of God. Faith is like a fire, if continuously fed it will continue to burn bright and strong.  But when left unattended it will become embers and eventually burn out.
2. Obey- If we will obey {parent, commandments, laws of the land} our lives will be more fulfilling and less difficult. {notice he didn't say easy}
3. Endure - Withstand with courage.
